An evocative self portrait by German Expressionist artist Kathe Kollwitz, lithograph, image size approximately 18 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches, sheet size 22 3/8 x 18 inches, 1938. Kollwitz was known for her dramatic images of the poor, especially women and children, and the stark realities of poverty and war. She also created many self portraits over the course of her long career, this litho being her last one.

This is a drypoint etching from 1897, printed in a special edition for the Graphic Arts Society of Vienna in 1903. State V/VI. Pencil signed in the lower right. Plate measures 10 1/2 x 5 3/8 inches on 15 3/4 x 11 3/4 inch wove paper. Catalog: Knesebeck 40. Inscribed Original-Radirung von Käthe Kollwitz, Druck & Verlag der Gesellschaft f. vervielf. Kunst in Wien (original etching by Käthe Kollwitz, published by the Society for Reproducing Art, Vienna). A sharply detailed print with good use of plate toning.
