Sunset Glow

This is an original oil on canvas painting by American artist Frank Vining Smith (1879-1967) This painting is clearly signed lower right corner. This painting although in the catalog is titled: "Sunset Glow" on the back of the canvas is an alternate title: "The New Moon" The canvas measures 22X30 inches and comes in a fine custom gilt frame. This painting was originally sold through Anderson Galleries in Chicago. They promoted Smiths works in the late 1920's.

THE annually recurrent exhibition of paintings of ships and the sea by Frank Vining Smith at the Anderson Galleries always makes an agreeable event about this season. Some thirty of Mr. Smith’s new canvases have just been hung at Anderson’s, and the impression they give is possibly more favorable than it has been in the past.
Even granting the sea’s changeless, ever-changing character and the myriad sorts and conditions of ships that sail it, Mr. Smith’s fertility and inventiveness appear more remarkable than ever in this exhibition. His knowledge of his subject is profound, in the opinion of sailors, who are always harsh critics. His ability to paint workmanlike pictures has long been established. But the ease with which he continues to find variations on a now familiar theme remain surprising." This is a very fine study of a view of the sea right after sunset.

En Plein Soleil (In the Sunlight)

An etching from 1881. This impression is pencil signed in the lower left, with the artist's red stamp in the lower right. It is plate signed in the lower left as well. Plate measures 7 7/8 x 11 3/4 inches on 10 x 14 inch watermarked laid paper. Catalog: Beraldi 45. Edition of 100. This etching has a rich drypoint burr and a wide tonal range. A plate from the album A Portfolio of Autograph Etchings, published by James R. Osgood and Company, Boston, 1881; printed by Goulding, London, 1881. The scene depicted is likely of Tissot's garden in St. John's Wood, London. The woman on the right is the artist's companion, Kathleen Newton, at left; her children, Cecil George Newton and Muriel Mary Violet Newton, and two unidentified figures. Tissot attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts along with James McNeill Whistler and Degas. He relocated to London after fighting in the Franco-Prussian war and in 1864 exhibited his oil paintings at the Royal Academy. He quickly became well known for his portraits of high-society women but retreated to a life of domesticity with his mistress Kathleen, whom he loved dearly. He never fully recovered from her death in 1882 and returned to Paris afterwards with a newfound interest in religion and spirituality.

Portrait of Charlotte

This is an original oil on panel painting by Dublin/Boston artist Margarita Pumpelly Smyth (1873-1959) Known as Daisy, she studied under Abbott Thayer in Dublin N.H.
This painting was shown at the Worcester Art Museum in the 1902 Summer Exhibit , the label is on the back along with a brass plaque from a Boston framer. Included in the show that year was the work of Frank Benson ,Edmund Tarbell, Mary Cassatt, Edward Redfield and Childe Hassam. The painting measures 30X22 inches, it is signed lower left but only is visible with a direct light, a black light shows it well. The painting is titled "Charlotte", probably painted in 1901-02. Daisy was an American Bahá'í, painter and roommates with Juliet Hutchings Thompson .. Although Married Daisy was quite independent. She and Thompson traveled together extensively by them selves. While her works are quite rare this one does show some of the early influences of Thayer and of course many of the later French artists of this time period.

Sailing at Sunset

This is a dramatic Seascape at sunset by American Artist William Formby Halsall (1841-1919) This oil on canvas painting created circa 1870 has a canvas size of 14X24 inches and comes in a deep period gilt frame. The painting is signed in red lower left corner. Halsall was educated in Boston, Massachusetts and worked as a sailor for seven years from 1852 to 1859. In 1860, he had begun to study fresco painting but due to the outbreak of the American Civil War, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He resumed his fresco study after two years of service. In 1862, Halsall changed to marine painting and studied at the Lowell Institute in Boston until 1870.[1] Halsall was also a founding member of the Provincetown Art Association in 1914. This is a wonderful tonalist expression of the Sea at sunset with the sailboats coming into port.

Clipper Nearing Port

This is an original oil on canvas painting by American artist James Gale Tyler (1855-1931) Tyler is the well known marine painter of the age of sail. The title of this piece which appears hand written on the back is: "Clipper nearing Port", this painting was done circa 1900. It has a canvas size of 24X20 inches and is in a heavy modern hand carved frame. The overall frame size is: 32X28 inches. The painting is clearly signed lower left. The painting is in good shape, no tears or inpainting, not relined it could use a very light cleaning but it is quite presentable as it now appears. Ready to hang on your wall.

The Road Home

Oil on panel, 9 x 11 inches, 1874, signed and dated lower right, in a period gilt frame. This is a wonderful tonalist view of a horse drawn hay wagon bound for home in the bleak cold of winter. This painting is by well known Canadian painter Francois B. De Blois. His formal art education includes studies in Europe under Charles-François Daubigny, probably in Paris or Auvers sur Oise a suburb to the north of Paris; and under Vincenzo Marinelli in Naples, Italy. De Blois’s paintings were exhibited in the Paris Salon in 1878; and in the United States with the Boston Athenaeum 1867 – 1873, the Brooklyn Art Association in 1874, the Boston Art Club 1875 – 1882, and the National Academy of Design 1880 – 1882. More recently, a De Blois painting was included in the 2008 exhibition titled “The Grand Tour Art and Travel, 1740 – 1914” at the Indiana University Art Museum.

The sitter is identified in a copy of a letter dated August 3, 1905, from Seth Mendell to William C. Davenport, President of The Machinists' Bank, Taunton, Massachusetts, in an envelope affixed to the back of the painting. Provenance: Estate of N. David Scotti, Providence, Rhode Island.

Soupe a Trois Sous

This is an original etching by American artist James Abbott McNeil Whistler. The title of this image is "Soupe A Trois Sous", It was created and printed in 1859 and according to the Glascow catalog this image was never published. The etching measures 5 7/8X8 7/8 inches, printed on a thin Japan laid paper, very fine condition, nice use of plate tone in the foreground. Soupe à trois sous ' is French for 'Soup for three sous', which was very cheap soup, and implies that the restaurant was a very basic café/bar. Whistler's first title, 'Café des Pieds Monilles' implies a particular café. 'Café des Pieds Monilles' is almost certainly a garbled reference to the Parisian Café des Pieds-Humides ('Café of the Wet Feet'). However, this title seems to have been immediately rejected in favour of the more familiar ' Soupe à trois sous '.(glascow)

Hulingham

This is a fine impression of the original etching by James Abbott McNeill Whistler titled: "Hurlingham", it was created and printed circa 1879. This etching is the 4th state of 4. The image measures 5 3/8X7 7/8 inches, printed on a medium weight laid type paper with watermark. This is a rich image with fine use of plate tone in the sky and water.
superb condition apart from two old pieces of tape residue upper corners, well away from the image area. Hurlingham is on the river Thames in Fulham, west London, across the river from Wandsworth. Hurlingham Park looks south, across the river, to Wandsworth Park. It was a site where both amateur and professional activities overlapped. Thames barges, boats and tugs as well as rowboats and skiffs crowded the broad river. Hurlingham itself was a sporting venue for London Society, including Royalty, to watch and play polo, while the public could watch boat races from the riverbank. This etching appears in the Kennedy catalog as image number 181.

This is an original oil on canvas painting of a Young Woman picking Flowers. The painting is signed lower right, it reads "Hildebrandt", the first initials are a bit rubbed and so hard to read. We are attributing this work to Howard Hildebrandt the American artist who was known to paint similar works. The painting measures 30X25 inches and comes in a victorian period picture frame. There are a few spots of touch up mostly at the bottom of her dress and the upper edge of the sky. The painting could use a light cleaning but is very presentable just as it now appears.

The Farmyard

Oil on canvas, 15 x 21 1/2 inches, c. 1880s, attributed to John Appleton Brown, partial monogram lower left corner, in a period frame. John Appleton Brown was born in Newburyport, Ma and studied painting with Albert T. Bricher and Benjamin C. Porter, then traveled to Paris to study with Emile Lambinet. He became known for his Barbizon inspired landscapes of New England and images of apple orchards, earning himself the nickname "Appleblossom Brown." Brown was a member of the Society of American Artists and the National Academy of Design. He exhibited his work at the Paris Salon, The Boston Art Club, The Carnegie Institute, and the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as in exhibitions with the Society of American Artists and the National Academy of Design.

Le Bouquet de Violettes

This is an impressionistic original color etching and aquatint by French master of the Belle Epoch, Manuel Robbe (French 1872-1936) The title of this work is:
"Le Bouquet de Violettes", it was created and printed in 1903 in the first edition of only 65 signed proofs. A larger edition was published after the signature was added to the plate. This etching is hand signed in pencil lower right. The image measures 17 1/2X11 3/4 inches. A fine impression, previously sold by Merrill Chase galleries, it appears in the Chase catalog as image number 105. Robbe studied at the Academie Julien and the Ecole des Beaux Artes in Paris.
With his hand application of color no two images look exactly the same, a very painterly technique.
