New York from Weehawken

A remarkable etching by James McBey of the New York City skyline from Weehawken, NJ, this etching measures 8 x 14 7/8 inches, 1940, cat: Hardie-277, plate signed and dated, hand signed and numbered "XXVII" in ink. Born into poverty McBey was primarily self-taught, becoming a very well respected artist and leading figure of the British Etching Revival. He traveled extensively throughout Europe, America and the Middle East, creating remarkable etchings of the places he visited. McBey lived in New York for several years, and his images of the city are considered some of his finest work.

The Guide

A very fine original drypoint etching by American Sporting Artist Frank Benson. The title of this work is "The Guide", it was created and printed in 1920 in an edition of 150.
Wonderful use of plate tone in printing of this image. The image measures 6 7/8X10 7/8 inches, printed on a soft Hodamura paper. There are two pressure creases in the lower corners of the image, probably occuring during the printing process but they are unobtrusive and only show up in a raking light. The etching is hand signed by the artist in the lower left border. The image shows the hunters guide leading the way through the shallow water.

Etching with drypoint, C. 1900. Pencil signed in the lower right. There is a repaired tear at the bottom of the print, not in the image. There are also some thin spots on the back of the paper. Plate measures 23 x 13 1/2 inches on 24 1/2 x 16 3/4 inch wove type paper. A well inked, captivating portrait. Helleu began his art career when he enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and worked as an apprentice for Theodore Deck, decorating ceramic plates with women's portraits. He became friends with many artists of La Belle Epoch, including John Singer Sargent, Whistler, Tissot, Monet and Rodin, and became well known for his elegant portraits of women of French society. He traveled between France and America, and in 1912 was commissioned to create the astrological ceiling decoration in New York's Grand Central Station.

An intense and brooding portrait with a rich drypoint burr. Plate measures 21 x 13 inches on 26 x 18 inch wove type paper. This etching by Arthur Briscoe measures 7 7/8 x 11 7/8 inches. Ink signed and numbered on cream laid paper, 1924. Cat: Hurst-85. Framed. Briscoe is known as one of the finest marine etcher of the 20th. century. He owned his own three ton cutter which he used to sail around the Essex coast. Also crewing on a Polish ship, he sketched every aspect of life on the boat. He studied at the Slade Art School and the Academy Julian in Paris.

Etching and drypoint, early proof of this rare image, image size 7 7/8 x 11 7/8 inches, 1911, cat: Schwartz-76, inscribed "probedruck" (test print) l.l. and signed l.r. both in red crayon, blindstamp l.l. just below image. Corinth began his art career studying at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich and went on to study under Bouguereau at the Academie Julian in Paris. He then returned to Germany and became a member and then president of the Berlin "Sezession".

This 1928 marine etching by the British printmaker Arthur Briscoe measures 12 1/8 x 8 7/8 inches, hand signed in ink and editioned as 7/75. Briscoe studied at the Slade Art School and the Academy Julian in Paris and then spent the rest of his time sailing, becoming one of the most prominent British marine artists of the 20th century. He owned his own three ton cutter which he used to sail around the Essex coast. Also crewing on a Polish ship, he sketched every aspect of life on the boat. Most of Briscoe's etchings show sailing ships and the men who sailed them. His beautifully etched images present an invaluable historical record of the workings of the last great commercial vessels.

This is a very fine Hudson River School landscape, oil on academy board, 9 3/4 x 18 3/4 inches, c. 1880s, unsigned, in an ornate period gilt frame. Although this painting is unsigned it is quite well painted, evidently by a very competent artist.

A truly remarkable original lithograph by Joseph Pennell, this image measures 21 1/8 x 16 5/8 inches, published in 1913 in a very small edition of 50, pencil signed, from Pennell's series of lithographs created in his travels through Italy and Greece. Printed on a cream colored laid type paper with the watermark "Ingres PMF Italia". In his book "In the Land of Temples", Pennell writes of this image, "Night was falling as I was coming back from drawing by the river Ilissos. The subject was the most impressive I saw in the Land of Temples, and in the gathering darkness I drew it as well as I could."

Members of the crew aboard the trawler "Guess Again" concentrate on hauling the days catch aboard. The forground figure is "Old Sam" a figure Briscoe used in many of his images. This richly inked image was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1927. Briscoe studied at the Slade Art School and the Academy Julian in Paris and then spent the rest of his time sailing, becoming one of the most prominent British marine artists of the 20th century. This is an original watercolor painting by American artist Hendrick Dirk Kruseman Van Elten. The painting came to us in what appears to be the original period frame with a gilt covered matboard. The painting measures 15X21 inches, the overall frame size is 30X35 inches. Clearly signed by the artist lower right corner, good condition, slight toning to the sky.

Despair

This listing is for a pair of images by American artist Isac Friedlander. The title is "Despair", they appear as a framed wood engraving dated 1931 and also the pencil study for the engraving also signed and dated 1931. Both pieces are in individual frames. The wood engraving has an image size of 12X7 inches, signed lower right in pencil titled and dated lower left. The drawing measures 12X7 1/4 inches, also signed and dated in the lower border. This is a very scarce image by this important Latvian American artist. Isac Friedlander (1890-1968) was born in Latvia. In 1912 he went to Italy where he met and worked with Russian artist Maxim Gorky. During this period he also received his only art training, studying etching, drawing and relief printing at the Academy of Rome. In 1937, he emigrated to New York where he worked full time as an artist until his death. He is best known for his woodcuts and etchings, and many museums have works by the artist, including the Smithsonian, Bibliotheque Nationale, and the Brooklyn Museum.
