In Their Holiday Clothes

This is a great original woodblock in colors by American artist Helen Hyde. The image size is 13 1/4 x 5 1/8 inches, published in 1914, cat: Mason & Mason-119, pencil signed, housed in a signed and dated, gilt, art deco frame; "Thulin", 1921. Helen Hyde grew up in California but traveled widely throughout her life. She studied at the Art Students League in New York from 1888-1889, then traveled throughout Europe for four years. While in Paris, she was first exposed to the Japanese style of woodblock prints, which captured her imagination and greatly influenced her entire career. She lived for eleven years in Japan, where she created the majority of her work, carving some of her own blocks as well as working with Japanese carvers and printers to produce her distinctive images.

The Albert Hall

This is a very rare etching from a scarce, unpublished plate by Francis Sydney Unwin. The image size is 12 1/8 x 16 inches, 1916, pencil signed; a richly inked impression on a fine cream colored Japan paper. Unwin studied at the Winchester School of Art and the Slade School; he traveled extensively throughout Europe and spent several months in Egypt drawing the tomb interiors for an archaeological expedition. He then settled in London, becoming known for his landscapes and remarkable interior architectural views, such as this finely detailed image of the Albert Hall. Unwin died at the age of 40, after suffering from tuberculosis for much of his adult life.

Etching with aquatint, image size 7 7/8 x 10 7/8 inches, 1918-1919, state VII/VIII, cat: Czestochowski-69, alternate title "Far Prospect," pencil signed, framed. Davies was a truly remarkable artist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries known for his dreamlike etchings and lithographs. In his catalog raisonne of Davies work, Czestochowski writes "In a time of social, political, scientific and artistic upheaval, Davies hewed to an unwavering inner vision, one of classically graceful figures in an eternal dance with nature." This rare, early state etching is a perfect example of the combination of classicism and modernism of Davies' work.

Geese

A very fine original etching by American sporting artist Aiden Lassell Ripley, image size 8 3/4 x 13 7/8 inches, c. 1930, pencil signed and titled. Ripley studied at the Boston Museum School under Phillip Hale and Frank Benson, then spent several years traveling throughout Europe. He became quite well known for his landscapes and sporting scenes, and also worked throughout his life in wildlife and endangered species preservation. He was a member of many prestigious artist groups of the 20th century, including the National Academy of Design, the American Watercolor Society, and the Audubon Artists; he served as the president of the Boston Guild of Artists from 1959 to 1969.

Etching, image size 6 x 9 1/8 inches, cat: Melot- C.7, later printing without Cadart lettering, possibly after it was removed. This is a very nice impression with wide borders, printed on a medium weight cream colored laid type paper. This atmospheric image from Corot's series of Italian landscapes is a great example of his ability to capture the life and movement of the scene with loose spontaneous lines and rich tones.

The Fisherman's Home

Measuring 11 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches, "The Fisherman's Home" is very similar to Strang's painting of the same name from 1905 which is owned by the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. This richly inked print from the Baldwin-Wallace College collection is also signed in pencil by the artist along the lower right edge of the image.

This image is editioned as 1/10, a very rare image. It is hand signed titiled and editioned in pencil in the lower margin. The image mesures 9X8 1/4 inches, printed on a handmade japan type paper. Isac Friedlander (1890-1968) was born in Latvia. In 1912 he went to Italy where he met and worked with Russian artist Maxim Gorky. During this period he also received his only art training, studying etching, drawing and relief printing at the Academy of Rome. In 1937, he emigrated to New York where he worked full time as an artist until his death. He is best known for his woodcuts and etchings, and many museums have works by the artist, including the Smithsonian, Bibliotheque Nationale, and the Brooklyn Museum.

This is a very fine etching by Stephen Parrish after a painting by Henry Ward Ranger. The image size is 18 x 23 3/4 inches, published by Klackner in 1887, cat: Schneider-124, with a remarque in the lower center margin, pencil signed by both Parrish and Ranger. In her description of this etching, Schneider writes that "there is a good match between the sensibilities of the painter, Henry Ward Ranger (1858-1916), and the printmaker, Parrish, so the result is a masterful etching."

A truly remarkable original lithograph, image size 11 1/4 x 8 3/4 inches, 1944, from a small edition of 25, pencil signed and dated. Born in England and found to be artistically talented at an early age, Gerald Brockhurst was enrolled in the Royal Academy Schools. A scholarship enabled him to study in France and Italy where the work of the great masters, especially Botticelli and da Vinci, had a lasting influenced on him. He became well known for his classically styled portraits etched with a remarkable sense of detail and texture.

A rich impression with beautiful plate tone, a weak section of the plate mark on the upper left side of the image.

The Orator

Original etching by the British artist, Arthur Brisco, measuring 6 1/2 x 10 7/8 inches, 1926, signed and numbered; 62/75, cat: Hurst-158. Britain's "General Strike" was the theme of Brisco's dramatic image of "The Orator". The strike, mainly by coal-miners upset with their goverments' reduction in wages and worsening conditions, also included dockers, printers, power station workers and transport workers, thus Brisco's interest in the subject.
