Les Glaneuses, The Gleaners

$8400.00

This is an original etching by Jean Francois Millet titled: "Les Glaneuses, The Gleaners. It was created in 1855 and printed on a laid type Japan paper. The image measures 7 1/2X10 inches, printed in a brown toned ink. This is the second state of two. The sheet size measures 9 3/4X13 inches. This etching is in very fine condition, never dipped or cleaned. There are two old spots of tape residue on the upper corners of the sheet but more than an inch away from the image. There is also a tiny hole in the bottom edge of the sheet but also well out side of the image area, at least 1 1/2 inches away. A beautiful and rich impression, nice use of plate-tone throughout. The etching of The Gleaners came before the painting of the same subject, which is now in the Musee d'Orsay, Paris, and was painted in 1857. Walking the fields around the small town of Barbizon, one theme returned to Millet's artistic sensibility repeatedly: gleaning, the age-old right of peasants to collect the grain left in the fields after the harvest.(r.e.lewis)

Soupe a Trois Sous

$1850.00

This is an original etching by American artist James Abbott McNeil Whistler. The title of this image is "Soupe A Trois Sous", It was created and printed in 1859 and according to the Glascow catalog this image was never published. The etching measures 5 7/8X8 7/8 inches, printed on a thin Japan laid paper, very fine condition, nice use of plate tone in the foreground. Soupe à trois sous ' is French for 'Soup for three sous', which was very cheap soup, and implies that the restaurant was a very basic café/bar. Whistler's first title, 'Café des Pieds Monilles' implies a particular café. 'Café des Pieds Monilles' is almost certainly a garbled reference to the Parisian Café des Pieds-Humides ('Café of the Wet Feet'). However, this title seems to have been immediately rejected in favour of the more familiar ' Soupe à trois sous '.(glascow)
