Portrait of a Young Boy
Portrait of a Young Boy

This is a remarkable portrait painted in oil on cradled board, measuring 15 1/2 x 11 5/8 inches. This painting bears the faint signature and date "J. B. Greuze 1776" leading us to believe it may be painted by the French master Jean Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805), although we have been unable to authenticate it. Because of this we are listing it as "European School", but it really is quite well painted and in the very distinct style of Greuze.

This hand-colored woodcut by Hermann-Paul, created c. 1918, is titled, dedicated and signed "Hermann Paul" in pencil and stamped "HERMANNPAUL" in green ink on the lower right margin. It measures 8 1/4 x 11 3/4 inches. Hermann-Paul worked in many different mediums but became known chiefly for his lithographs and hand-colored woodcuts. Working with fellow artists, Vuillard, Toulouse Lautrec, and Matisse, an "intimists" style was born which portrayed in caricatures the strata of Parisian society, the rich as well as the poor.
