Setting Sail, Early Morning
1850-1921, American

Oil on canvas, 12 x 20 inches, 1881, signed and dated, in a period gilt frame. As a young man, Johnson was a sailor and one of only twelve survivors aboard a ship that caught fire and sank of the coast of South Africa. He returned to his native Boston, Massachusetts, and studied art with marine painter William E. Norton. Johnson went on to become very well known for his nautical and marine paintings in the later part of the 19th century.

Ohio in the Spring
1903-1996, American

This is a very fine original wood engraving, image size 5 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches, c. 1940, edition of 75, pencil signed, numbered and titled, framed. Born in China of missionary parents, Herbert Waters graduated from high school in Shanghai and then moved to the US to pursue his art career. After college at Dennison University he taught at UNH and the Holderness School and became an artist for NH's WPA project. He excelled at the art of wood engraving and he used the beauty of the NH landscape as his inspiration.
