Surf, Monhegan
1869-1955, American

A brilliant seascape by the renowned artist, Sears Gallagher. Created c. 1920, sight size is 13 1/4 x 19 1/4 inches and is signed by the artist on the lower right. On the back of the sheet, written in the artist hand, is the title and the artists signature. Known for his etchings and watercolors of historic streets and landmarks in and around Boston, he also had a love of marine settings and created many scenes of coastal Maine, especially Monhegan Island.

Little Porcupine
1922-2000, American

This wood engraving by Leonard Baskin measures 1 x 1 inch, printed on a sheet size of 17 1/2 x 17 inches. Published in 1951, this unsigned proof is #124 in the Fern and O'Sullivan catalogue. After serving in the Navy during WWII, Baskin began his career as a printmaker in the late 1940s, beginning with simple linocuts, but quickly progressing to dramatic wood engravings, then later etchings and lithographs. Known for his graphic images created by the simple interplay of black on white, combined with his dramatic use of line, Baskin remains one of America's greatest printmakers.

The Blacksmith Shop
1875-1939, American

This charcoal drawing by John(Jack)Fenton measures 10 x 14 inches and is pencil signed on the lower right corner. In this image, Fenton depicts local characters gathering at the blacksmith shop to catch up on daily events. Fenton was a native of New York and studied at Columbia University and the New York School of Art. He became a painter, illustrator and teacher with his works exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago.
