Early Morning on the High Seas
1879-1967, American

This remarkable oil on canvas was painted by noted American marine artist Frank Vining Smith, c. 1930. The canvas measures 30 x 36 inches, and is signed in the lower right corner, in a very fine modern gilt frame. Frank Vining Smith was born and raised on Cape Cod Massachusetts and had a strong affinity with the ocean from a very young age. He studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston under Frank Benson, Philip Hale and Edward C. Tarbell, then at the Art Students League of New York.

Etching with aquatint, image size 7 7/8 x 10 7/8 inches, 1918-1919, state VII/VIII, cat: Czestochowski-69, alternate title "Far Prospect," pencil signed, framed. Davies was a truly remarkable artist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries known for his dreamlike etchings and lithographs.
