Mare and Foal

This is a very sweet painting of a mare and her foal in a European landscape. It is painted with oil on panel, panel size 6 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches, frame size 13 1/2 x 14 inches, c. 1870s, with an indistinct signature in the lower left corner, part of which appears to have been rubbed off by the edge of the frame. This painting comes in a remarkable ornate period gilt frame.
