The sitter is identified in a copy of a letter dated August 3, 1905, from Seth Mendell to William C. Davenport, President of The Machinists' Bank, Taunton, Massachusetts, in an envelope affixed to the back of the painting. Provenance: Estate of N. David Scotti, Providence, Rhode Island.
A very fine original mezzotint, this image measures 16 x 24 1/4 inches, c. 1931, pencil signed. Peter Ilstead was an important Danish mezzotint artist in the early 20th century, whose work is credited with starting the 'Copenhagen Interior School' style of painting and printmaking. He specialized in quiet, tranquil indoor scenes with an atmospheric, Vermeer-like quality.
