Heavy Surf at Sunset
1832-1895, American

This is a beautiful luminist style seascape by Mauritz Frederik Hendrik De Haas, one of the preeminent marine and landscape painters of the 19th century. Oil on canvas, 24 x 40 inches, c. 1880, signed on the lower left, in an ornate period gilt frame. Born in Holland, De Haas studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and at The Hague. At 27 years old he immigrated to the US and opened a studio in NYC. He painted exquisite marine and landscape views, and was known for his masterful ability to capture the full range of light reflecting off a stormy surf or the moon reflecting off a calm sea.

The Dansant
British, 1889-1962

This original drypoint engraving by the British artist, Leonard Brightwell, measures 9 3/4 x 14 3/4 inches, pencil signed and titled, edition 100, published by James Connell and Sons, London. Brightwell studied at Lambeth School of Art in London and in addition spent countless hours at the Zoological Gardens where he sketched monkeys and various other animals he used in his many engravings and illustrations.
