1848-1923, American

William Preston Phelps was a plein air painter. In 1876, he travelled to Europe and began studying at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich. He later moved to New York and then back to Europe with his friend William Meritt Chase.

Framed oil on canvas, 24 x 36 inches. Signed in the lower left. The subject is likely his family homestead in Chesham, New Hampshire.

C. 1941. An early study for the well-known lithograph of the same name. The lithograph was an advertisement for Purlator Oil Filters in the 1941 Saturday Evening Post. Charcoal and ink on paper. Signed "Rob" in the lower right. Image size 10 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches on 12 x 12 inch medium weight wove type paper. An incredibly sharp drawing with dramatic chiaroscuro.
