An truly angelic portrait of a young woman attributed to the famous portrait artist, Thomas Sully. This oil on canvas measures 24 x 20 inches, sight size 21 1/2 x 17 1/2 inch oval, c. 1840. It is unsigned and in a period frame. Sully was born in England and at nine years old his parents and his eight siblings immigrated to South Carolina. Noticing his talents at an early age he was sent to study under his brother in law, Jean Belzons, a French miniaturist. This ended badly and he chose to study with his brother Lawrence for the next few years.

This charcoal drawing by John(Jack)Fenton measures 10 x 14 inches and is pencil signed on the lower right corner. In this image, Fenton depicts local characters gathering at the blacksmith shop to catch up on daily events. Fenton was a native of New York and studied at Columbia University and the New York School of Art. He became a painter, illustrator and teacher with his works exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago.
