Contemplation

A lovely portrait of a young woman sitting in a garden, this etching measures 8 7/8 x 6 1/2 inches, c. 1910, pencil signed and ineligibly titled. Born in Chicago, MacEwen traveled to Europe to study art, first in Munich with Frank Duveneck, then in Paris with Corman and Robert-Fleury. He stayed in Europe for many years with studios in both Paris and Holland, where he was also a founding member of the Egmond Artist Colony. Primarily a painter, MacEwen was known for his impressionistic portraits and genre scenes which were quite well received in both Europe and America.
