Polar Bear
1907-1982, British/American

This framed wood engraving, titled "Polar Bear" is by master wood engraver Nora Unwin. Image size is 3 3/8 x 4 3/8 inches with the total framed size of 12 x 11 inches. It is pencil signed and titled on the lower margin in an edition of 40, and is number 139 in the McGoldrick catalog of Unwin's work. Although we do not have an exact date, McGoldrick lists this image as being created before 1940. Born into the well known Unwin book publishing family in England, Nora showed her artistic talents from an early age and was schooled heavily throughout her early years in numerous creative arts.

This pencil drawing by Jack Levine measures 5 1/2 x 5 inches. It is pencil signed on the lower right. Levine was best known for his satires on modern life and political corruption. Born in South Boston into a large family, his drawing abilities were apparent at an young age. At 14 he entered a painting program at Harvard and a few years later was employed in the Works Progress Administration. His lower class childhood was often a subject of his paintings and he became known for "telling it like it is".
