The Nightwatchman

Etching, image size 11 7/8 x 8 1/4 inches, c. 1930, edition of 100, pencil signed and titled. Leonard Robert Brightwell studied at the Lambeth School of Art in London, but also spent many hours sketching at the Zoological Gardens. He became quite well known for his images of birds and animals, even earning several commissions to create scientific illustrations for museums and other organizations. In this dramatic etching, which is arguably one of his finest, Brightwell uses rich contrast and delicate details to create a remarkable nocturnal image that nearly leaps from the page.
