Incredible British Tonalist Landscape
1820-1845, Active, British

Oil on canvas, 16 x 24 inches, signed and dated 1851 lower right. Although initially known for his sporting scenes his work really excels in his atmospheric landscapes. The powerful light of the sunset reflecting off the dark, rugged landscape suggests qualities similar to Joseph M.W. Turner, the father of British Romanticism. The human in this scene is of small consequence compared to the majestic beauty surrounding her. Jones exhibited work at the British Institute, The Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists.

Woodblock print by Kunisada measuring 13 7/8 x 9 3/4 inches. Signed and sealed, l.r. Known as one of the “giants” of the Japanese print. Kunisada was the most popular, prolific and financially successful designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in 19th-century Japan.

A fine pencil drawing by Dexter Dawes done on a heavy weight paper. It measures 7 5/8 x 11 inches. Dawes was born in Englewood, NJ and went on to study at New York City's Art Student League. He summered in Marlboro, NH surrounded by beautiful gardens with views of Mount Monadnock which became the inspiration for many of his lithographs and paintings. He belonged to a number of associations including the National Arts Club.
