"L'optique" Peep Show

This is a very rare early French genre painting depicting a traveling vendor with his peep show in a country setting, with a mother and her children viewing the display titled "Le Vrai Jesus". Oil on canvas, 30 x 25 inches, overall frame size 41 x 36 inches, c. 1780s. This painting is unsigned, but it is exquisitely painted; the style and subject very reminiscent of the work of Louis Leopold Boilly (1761-1845). The painting was relined on aluminum and has some areas of inpainting, mostly the bottom edge and upper right, but overall is really quite presentable.

1735-1785, British

Engraving by William Woollett after the painting by R. Wilson, image size 15 1/4 x 21 inches, published June 4 1778, titled "Solitude" with a remarque of a shield in the lower center margin. This is a rare early proof before additional lettering.

1872- c.1950, American
