1856-1939, German

Oil on Academy Board, 12 x 9 inches, signed and inscribed "M. v. Schmaedel/M√ľnchen" lower right, period frame. The sitter is identified in a copy of a letter dated August 3, 1905, from Seth Mendell to William C. Davenport, President of The Machinists' Bank, Taunton, Massachusetts, in an envelope affixed to the back of the painting. Provenance: Estate of N. David Scotti, Providence, Rhode Island.

Anais II
1890-1978, English

This 1930 etching of "Anais", the artist's first wife, measures 8 3/4 x 6 3/4 inches and is pencil signed on the l.r., framed, Fletcher cat: 67, in an edition of 111. Born in England and found to be artistically talented at an early age, he was enrolled in the Royal Academy Schools. A scholarship enabled him to study in France and Italy where the great masters, Botticelli and da Vinci, had a lasting influenced on him. A self-taught etcher who became one of the best portrait etchers in art history being elected into the Royal Society of Painter - Etchers and Engravers in 1921.

This is an original ink drawing on paper, image size 6 7/8 x 11 inches, 1933, signed and dated in the lower right corner. Hopper Emory was born in Baltimore, Maryland and had a successful career in banking before he turned exclusively to his artwork. He traveled to England where he studied at the Heatherly School of Art in London, then returned to Maryland where he became known for his delicately rendered architectural and maritime etchings.
