Painting

"L'optique" Peep Show

This is a very rare early French genre painting depicting a traveling vendor with his peep show in a country setting, with a mother and her children viewing the display titled "Le Vrai Jesus". Oil on canvas, 30 x 25 inches, overall frame size 41 x 36 inches, c. 1780s. This painting is unsigned, but it is exquisitely painted; the style and subject very reminiscent of the work of Louis Leopold Boilly (1761-1845). The painting was relined on aluminum and has some areas of inpainting, mostly the bottom edge and upper right, but overall is really quite presentable.

Drawing

The Visitor
1885-1972, American

A very fine original drawing, sheet size 16 3/8 x 20 inches, c. 1930, signed "Grace McLean" in the lower right corner. Grace McLean studied at the Art Institute of Chicago with John Vanderpoel, H. Walcott and Lawrence Murphy, then settled in Los Angeles CA. She was most active in the 1930s, and taught at the Pasadena Academy of Fine Art and the Stickney Art School. This is a very cool drawing with a slight Regionalist, almost sculptural sensibility.
