Incredible British Tonalist Landscape
1820-1845, Active, British

Oil on canvas, 16 x 24 inches, signed and dated 1851 lower right. Although initially known for his sporting scenes his work really excels in his atmospheric landscapes. The powerful light of the sunset reflecting off the dark, rugged landscape suggests qualities similar to Joseph M.W. Turner, the father of British Romanticism. The human in this scene is of small consequence compared to the majestic beauty surrounding her. Jones exhibited work at the British Institute, The Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists.

Pascin was a central figure in the Montparnasse artistic community in early 20th century Paris and was also known as the 'Prince of Montparnasse' for his wild social life and notorious parties.
