Heavy Surf at Sunset

This is a beautiful luminist style seascape by Mauritz Frederik Hendrik De Haas, one of the preeminent marine and landscape painters of the 19th century. Oil on canvas, 24 x 40 inches, c. 1880, signed on the lower left, in an ornate period gilt frame. Born in Holland, De Haas studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and at The Hague. At 27 years old he immigrated to the US and opened a studio in NYC. He painted exquisite marine and landscape views, and was known for his masterful ability to capture the full range of light reflecting off a stormy surf or the moon reflecting off a calm sea.

This rare, pencil signed etching by the American artist, Charles A. Platt measures 6 x 9 inches, edition of 250, part of a portfolio created by the NY Etching Club in 1884. Platt was a very successful painter and etcher, known for his delicately rendered New England landscapes and harbor scenes. He was also a talented architect and a member of the Saint-Gaudens Art Colony in Cornish, NH.
