Cabin by the Lake
1854-1927, American

This is a luminous scene of a cabin by a still lake with the glowing colors of the setting sun lingering in the sky, casting blue shadows over summer landscape. Pastel on paper, sight size 12 3/4 x 17 inches, c. 1900, signed in the lower right corner. This pastel comes tastefully displayed in a period maple frame. Clarence Braley was a Massachusetts artist who specialized in pastel and watercolor landscapes. He was a member of the New Bedford Art Association and exhibited his work at the Boston Art Club and the Art Institute of Chicago. (M)

This 1949 wood engraving by Thomas Nason measures 6 3/8 x 8 7/8 inches, pencil signed and dated in an edition of 350 for Associated American Artists, cat. BPL-462. Known as the "Poet Engraver of New England", Nason was a prolific artist who specialized in incredibly detailed, atmospheric wood engravings of the New England landscape.

This drawing by Dexter Dawes measures 21 1/4 x 14 1/2 inches and is dated "July 7, 1929" on the lower margin. Dawes was born in Englewood, NJ and went on to study at New York City's Art Student League. He summered in Marlboro, NH surrounded by beautiful gardens with views of Mount Monadnock which became the inspiration for many of his lithographs and drawings. He belonged to a number of associations including the National Arts Club
