Moonlight Sail
1839-1904, American

This wonderful moonlit scene by Charles Henry Gifford measures 5 7/8 x 5 3/4 inches, signed in the lower right, c. 1870 and appears to be in it's original gilt frame. Charles Henry Gifford (American Luminist) was a marine, landscape and portrait painter in the style of the Hudson River School. His interest in painting began at an early age and was heavily influenced by the New Bedford artists Albert Bierstadt, William Bradford and Albertus van Beest, instilling a love of painting in Gifford that was to last the rest of his life. He was best known as a luminist painter.

The Phoenician Coast
1883-1959, Scottish

This fine etching titled "The Phoenician Coast" depicts a rocky coast with mast ships in the distance. The image size measures 8 1/5 x 12 3/8 inches with adequate margins. Printed in 1934 in an edition of 80 it is plate signed and dated and also hand signed in pen and ink. McBey's love of the sea and boats is apparent in this landscape of the Syrian coast, near Tyre. Born into poverty he was a self-taught artist only to become the leading figure of the British Etching Revival. His works vary in subject and style but all reveal his masterful draughtsmanship and his sense of light.
