On the Road to the Farmhouse

This c. 1870's landscape of life on the farm by Alfred Cornelius Howland measures 17 x 13 inches and is signed on the l.l. Oil on canvas, laid on board and framed in a gold period gilt frame. Howland was born in Walpole, NH in 1838. Early in his career he learned the art of engraving and studied drawing and lithography in Boston. At the age of 22 he traveled to Germany to study at the Royal Academy and from there to Paris, where he studied with the talented Barbizon artists, Corot, Millet and Rousseau whose tonalist influence affected Howland's style for the remainder of his career.
