The Bathers
1858-1911, American

This is a richly colored original painting by American artist Charles W. Stetson. Oil on canvas, 9 x 14 inches, 1893, signed and dated in the lower left corner, in what appears to be the original gilt frame. Charles Stetson was a self taught artist and founding member of the Providence Art Club. He was known as a 'colorist' for his richly hued landscapes and figure studies, many of which have a dreamlike, allegorical quality. Memorial exhibits of his work were shown at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Detroit Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum, New York.


Waterloo Bridge and Somerset House

A beautiful architectural cityscape by master printmaker, Joseph Pennell. Measuring 8 x 11 inches, it is pencil signed with publishers label on the backing. Created in 1905 in an edition of probably 75, cat: Wuerth #379. Pennell was an important American etcher, lithographer and illustrator. Good friends with James McNeill Whistler, he and his wife co-authored his biography. Pennell was known for his continued experimentation with technique and style, producing cityscapes, landscapes and marine scenes. He also printed many of his own images.
