Setting Sail, Early Morning
1850-1921, American

Oil on canvas, 12 x 20 inches, 1881, signed and dated, in a period gilt frame. As a young man, Johnson was a sailor and one of only twelve survivors aboard a ship that caught fire and sank of the coast of South Africa. He returned to his native Boston, Massachusetts, and studied art with marine painter William E. Norton. Johnson went on to become very well known for his nautical and marine paintings in the later part of the 19th century.

Fishermen in the Fog

This original etching by the American artist Gordon Grant measures 7 7/8 x 9 3/4 inches and is signed in pencil, l.r. Gordon Grant was born in California and was sent alone to Great Britain around Cape Horn when he was thirteen years old for his education. He worked as a staff artist for New York World and Harper's Weekly, covering both the Boer War and the Mexican Revolution, but became most widely known for his marine paintings and fine prints.
