Paul Ashbrook studied at the Art Students League in New York with William Chase, then at the Cincinnati Art Academy with Frank Duvanek, with whom he maintained a close friendship, even serving as a pallbearer at Duvanek's funeral. Ashbrook went on to teach at the Cincinnati Art Academy and traveled extensively through Mexico and Europe, creating paintings and etchings of the people and landscapes he encountered.
