A Great Battle from the Taiheiki

This is a great color woodblock triptych by Japanese artist Utagawa Yoshikazu (active 1850-1870), titled "A Great Battle from the Taiheiki". The sight size is 14 1/8 x 29 inches, frame size 21 1/4 x 35 1/4 inches, c. 1860s, artist signature, with all appropriate stamps and seals. This epic battle scene is from the Taiheiki, a Japanese historical epic set in the 14th century which tells the stories of the warring clans and friction between the emperors and the shogun warriors. Another impression of this image is included in the collection of the Museum of Fine Art, Boston.

This pencil drawing by Jack Levine measures 5 1/2 x 5 inches. It is pencil signed on the lower right. Levine was best known for his satires on modern life and political corruption. Born in South Boston into a large family, his drawing abilities were apparent at an young age. At 14 he entered a painting program at Harvard and a few years later was employed in the Works Progress Administration. His lower class childhood was often a subject of his paintings and he became known for "telling it like it is".
