Lake in the Mountains
1813-1891, American

Oil on canvas, 20 x 30 inches, c. 1875, signed "SL Gerry," l.l, in what appears to be the original gilt frame. Samuel Gerry was a self-taught artist known for his majestic mountain landscapes, especially of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Although he didn't have much formal training, he was greatly influenced by the work of Thomas Cole and A. B Durand, as well as some artists of the European schools. In the 1840s, Gerry was considered the leader of the White Mountain School of landscape painters.

Lithograph, image size 9 5/8 x 13 7/8 inches, 1943, Zink 69, AAA, this print is after a painting by the artist titled "Haying". deMartelly had a home in rural New Hampshire and was known to portrayed his neighbors in his art. The figure on the right is probably Newt Tolman, one of those neighbors.

This signed, charcoal on paper, portrait is by Paul Lewis Clemens. Sight size is 16 5/8 x 13 1/8 inches and is presented in a wooden frame. It is identified and titled on a label from James Vigeveno Galleries, Westwood Hills, Los Angeles, California, on the paper backing. A portrait, figure, genre and garden painter, Clemens studied at the University of Wisconsin with Oscar Hagen and the Art Institute of Chicago. He is best known for his movie star portraits of the Hollywood era in the 40s, but was also gifted for other styles, from French impressionism to Dutch linearity.
