Portrait of a Lady

Oil on panel, 24 1/2 x 20 inches, c. 1850s, in the original frame. George Durrie was a Connecticut artist specializing in portraiture and landscapes, many of which were published as lithographs by Currier and Ives. According to our sources, many of George Durrie's paintings were completed by his brother, John Durrie after his death in 1863. On this painting, the back of the panel was covered with canvas by a restorer, and the writing that was on the back of the panel transcribed to the canvas. The first two initials are obscured, but the remainder reads "[??] Durrie A./Pinxt"
