Painting

Incredible British Tonalist Landscape
1820-1845, Active, British

Oil on canvas, 16 x 24 inches, signed and dated 1851 lower right. Although initially known for his sporting scenes his work really excels in his atmospheric landscapes. The powerful light of the sunset reflecting off the dark, rugged landscape suggests qualities similar to Joseph M.W. Turner, the father of British Romanticism. The human in this scene is of small consequence compared to the majestic beauty surrounding her. Jones exhibited work at the British Institute, The Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists.

Print

Bucko Mate
1873-1943, British

A powerful image of the "Bucko Mate" by the marine artist, Arthur Brisco. It measures 6 7/8 x 11 7/8 inches on laid paper. Published in 1926, it is ink signed and numbered. Cat: Hurst 152, framed. The "bucko mate" was the captains right-hand man who made sure the sailors towed the line. The great trading ships of the late 19th C. and into the early 20th C. were ruled by brute force. Many men met their deaths on these ships because they were driven to their limits and beyond in their quest to get to the California goldfields first.
