Landscape with Sheep
1809-1889, Belgian

This is a beautiful painting of a ewe and her lambs in a summer meadow, with mallard ducks swimming nearby. It is painted with oils on panel and measures 5 1/2 x 7 5/8 inches, 1860, signed and dated lower right, in a period gilt frame. There is an inscription in French on the back of the board, written in the artist's hand, but we have been unable to decipher it. Van Severdonck was a Belgian artist known for his small scale landscapes and images of farm animals, especially sheep.

Handsigned in pen and ink in the lower left. Plate measures 3 7/8 x 7 3/16 inches, chine-collé on 4 5/8 x 8 1/2 inch wove type paper. Plate signed in the upper left and dated 1890. This etching is one of two original etchings this French artist contributed to P. G. Hamerton's publication entitled, "Etching and Etchers". Charles Jacques was one of the leading artists of the Barbizon school. This finely detailed print has strong etched line and superb luminosity, and is a charming portrayal of rustic life.
