Heavy Surf at Sunset
1832-1895, American

A beautiful luminist style seascape by one of the most famous 19th century marine and landscape painters, Mauritz Frederik Hendrik De Haas, measuring 24 x 40 inches, oil on canvas, signed on the lower left, period frame. Born in Holland, De Haas studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and at The Hague. At 27 years old he immigrated to the US and opened a studio in NYC. He painted exquisite marine and landscape views known for his full range of light reflecting off a stormy surf or the moon reflecting off a calm sea.

This c. 1910 etching by Fred Hall measures 13 3/8 x 10 3/4 inches and is pencil signed. Fred Hall was an English painter and printmaker who exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon winning a gold medal there in 1912. This image is of St. Nicolas du Chardonnet, a Roman Catholic church in the center of Paris.
