Painting

Lake in the Mountains
1813-1891, American

Oil on canvas, 20 x 30 inches, c. 1875, signed "SL Gerry," l.l, in what appears to be the original gilt frame. Samuel Gerry was a self-taught artist known for his majestic mountain landscapes, especially of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Although he didn't have much formal training, he was greatly influenced by the work of Thomas Cole and A. B Durand, as well as some artists of the European schools. In the 1840s, Gerry was considered the leader of the White Mountain School of landscape painters.

Print

Geese

Etching, image size 8 3/4 x 13 7/8 inches, c. 1940, pencil signed and titled. Provenance: Haley and Steele, Boston. A flock of canada geese land among the marsh grass in this dramatic etching, a great example of how well Ripley managed to capture the movement and life of his wildfowl subjects.
