Print

Business Neglected
1831-1913, American

Etching, image size 13 1/4 x 9 3/8 inches, c. 1884, cat: Tyler-10, plate signed and pencil signed. This is a very rich impression printed on Japan paper. John George Brown grew up in a poor family in London, becoming an apprentice at a glass factory at the age of 14. In 1853 he emigrated to Brooklyn and studied art at the National Academy of Design, becoming one of the most successful American artists of the 19th century. This etching is an excellent example of the slightly sentimental depictions of the working class and homeless children of New York City for which Brown was known.
