Painting

Pastoral Landscape with Cows
1854-1934, American

This is a great original painting by George Arthur Hays, with several cows resting in a verdant landscape. Oil on canvas, 8 x 10 inches, 1908, signed lower left, signed and dated on the back of the canvas, in an ornate period gilt frame. George Arthur Hays was born in Greenville, NH, but lived for most of his adult life in Providence, Rhode Island. Although Hays had very little formal training, he was a successful artist known for his Barbizon inspired landscapes, many with cows or sheep.

Print

Man With Clasped Hands
1922-2000, American

This woodcut by Leonard Baskin measures 2 x 3 inches and was published in 1949. This image is not shown in the Fern and O'Sullivan catalogue but we think it is listed as #35. After serving in the Navy during WWII, Baskin began his career as a printmaker in the late 1940s, beginning with simple linocuts, but quickly progressing to dramatic wood engravings, then later etchings and lithographs.
