Setting Sail, Early Morning
1850-1921, American

Oil on canvas, 12 x 20 inches, 1881, signed and dated, in a period gilt frame. As a young man, Johnson was a sailor and one of only twelve survivors aboard a ship that caught fire and sank of the coast of South Africa. He returned to his native Boston, Massachusetts, and studied art with marine painter William E. Norton. Johnson went on to become very well known for his nautical and marine paintings in the later part of the 19th century.

The Far Shore
1906-1978, American

A beautiful image of the Maine coast by Stow Wengenroth, this lithograph measures 8 x 13 3/8 inches, 1957, cat: Stuckey-258, pencil signed. This litho was in the 27th publication of the Prairie Print Makers, exclusively for their associate membership. Wengenroth was one of the preeminent lithographers of 20th century America, known for his atmospheric, incredibly detailed images of the New England landscape and coastline.
