Meadow in Bloom
1876-1936, American

Oil on artist board, 12 x 16 inches, unsigned, c. 1930, unsigned. Born in Germany, Saling emigrated to America through Ellis Island in 1893 at the age of 17. He was a successful decorator and artist first in New York City, then in Hartford, Connecticut. In the late 1920s, he moved to Lyme, Connecticut, the setting for many of his landscapes. He was a member of many prestigious artist's groups, including the Salmagundi Club, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, the Connecticut League of Art Students and the Springfield Art League.

This color woodblock print by Hiroshi Yoshida, created in 1930 measures 9 5/8 x 14 x 14 5/8 inches. It is signed and titled in English on the lower margin. Listed in "The Complete Woodblock Prints of Hiroshi Yoshida" as #141. The artist seal is within the image and the jizuri seal is on the left margin. Yoshida was a very successful early 20th century Japanese printmaker who is widely considered one of the finest artists of the shin-hanga movement in Japan.
