Portrait of a Young Woman in a Black Hat

This beautiful portrait of a woman in the style of Abbott Handerson Thayer measures 24 x 30 inches and was created c. 1910. It is an unsigned oil on canvas. A member of the Dublin School, Thayer spent his childhood at the base of Mt. Monadnock in Dublin, NH, where his love of nature blossomed. His first works were watercolors of animals. Later in life he turned to portrait painting to suppliment the family income. Among his famous sitters were Mark Twain and Henry James and frequently he used his children as models.

Etching and drypoint, early proof of this rare image, image size 7 7/8 x 11 7/8 inches, 1911, cat: Schwartz-76, inscribed "probedruck" (test print) l.l. and signed l.r. both in red crayon, blindstamp l.l. just below image. Corinth began his art career studying at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich and went on to study under Bouguereau at the Academie Julian in Paris. He then returned to Germany and became a member and then president of the Berlin "Sezession".
