Painting

Heavy Surf at Sunset
1832-1895, American

This is a beautiful luminist style seascape by Mauritz Frederik Hendrik De Haas, one of the preeminent marine and landscape painters of the 19th century. Oil on canvas, 24 x 40 inches, c. 1880, signed on the lower left, in an ornate period gilt frame. Born in Holland, De Haas studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and at The Hague. At 27 years old he immigrated to the US and opened a studio in NYC. He painted exquisite marine and landscape views, and was known for his masterful ability to capture the full range of light reflecting off a stormy surf or the moon reflecting off a calm sea.

Print

Student and Master
1904-1971, American

This 1934 lithograph is an example of the famous satirical art of Russell Theodore Limbach, measuring 8 7/8 x 11 1/8 inches, pencil signed, commissioned by the Cleveland Print Makers, in an edition of 250. Limbach was the director of the Cleveland Print Makers in 1934 and it is most likely he printed the edition for "Student and Master" himself.
