Grazing Sheep at Dusk

Sheep grazing at the end of the day are featured in this oil on canvas by the French painter, Francois-Auguste Ortmans. Canvas size is 13 x 16 inches, signed and dated l.r., housed in a ornate gold frame, identified on a printed German label affixed to the stretcher also with a canvas stencil from Ancienne Maison Valle, Paris, on the reverse, and with a partial Parisian framemaker's label on the back of the frame.

This 1919 etching by the American artist Joseph Pennell measuring 9 7/8 x 11 7/8 inches and is pencil signed with the "imp" after his name indicating Pennell printed this image himself, cat: Wuerth 721, from his "Railway Series", edition of fifty proofs. Pennell was an important American etcher, lithographer and illustrator. Good friends with James McNeill Whistler, he and his wife co-authored his biography. Pennell was known for his continued experimentation with technique and style, producing cityscapes, landscapes and marine scenes.
