This is a very atmospheric landscape by William C. Fitler, oil on canvas, 10 x 8 inches, c. 1890, signed in the lower left corner, in a period carved walnut frame. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Fitler studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and was known for his tonalist inspired landscapes of New York and New England. He exhibited his work widely in the late 19th century, including at the National Academy, the Brooklyn Art Club, the Boston Art Club, the Pennsylvania Academy, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

In this image, Fenton depicts local characters gathering at the blacksmith shop to catch up on daily events. Fenton was a native of New York and studied at Columbia University and the New York School of Art. He became a painter, illustrator and teacher with his works exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago.
