William Preston Phelps was a plein air painter. In 1876, he travelled to Europe and began studying at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich. He later moved to New York and then back to Europe with his friend William Meritt Chase.

Framed oil on canvas, 24 x 36 inches. Signed in the lower left. The subject is likely his family homestead in Chesham, New Hampshire.

William Preston Phelps was a plein air painter. In 1876, he travelled to Europe and began studying at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich. He later moved to New York and then back to Europe with his friend William Meritt Chase.

Framed oil on canvas, 25 x 48 inches. Provenance originally sold by Doll & Richards, label on back. Painting is in original custom frame. Signed in the lower right with the word "munchen," meaning it was painted in Munich. Circa 1879.


Fall Landscape with Sheep

A great New Hampshire landscape by William Preston Phelps, this painting measures 16 x 24 inches, oil on canvas, c. 1900, signed in the lower right corner, in a beautiful modern gilt frame. Known as the "Painter of Monadnock", Phelps lived most of his life in Dublin and Chesham, NH, with the exception of several years he spent studying art in Europe. He painted many scenes of the area landscape of farms, fields and forests, most of which were set against the backdrop of the majestic Mount Monadnock.

Heading For Port

This seascape of a ship's deck, under very adverse weather conditions, by the American artist, Gordon Grant measures 9 x 12 inches and is pencil signed. Gordon Grant was born in California and was sent alone to Great Britain around Cape Horn when he was thirteen years old for his education. He worked as a staff artist for New York World and Harper's Weekly, covering both the Boer War and the Mexican Revolution, but became most widely known for his marine paintings and lithographs.
