George H. Shorey
1870-1944, American

Recess - The District School
1870-1944, American

This etching by George Shorey measures 7 1/8 x 11 7/8 inches and is pencil signed on the lower right margin. Games of marbles, jump-rope, crack the whip, baseball, tag, telling of tall tales, the teacher admonishing a student, and let us not forget the sneaking out of detention game all rendered in this one image illustrates Shorey's attention to detail and his ability to create energy and movement on a two dimensional surface.

Painting

Incredible British Tonalist Landscape
1820-1845, Active, British

Oil on canvas, 16 x 24 inches, signed and dated 1851 lower right. Although initially known for his sporting scenes his work really excels in his atmospheric landscapes. The powerful light of the sunset reflecting off the dark, rugged landscape suggests qualities similar to Joseph M.W. Turner, the father of British Romanticism. The human in this scene is of small consequence compared to the majestic beauty surrounding her. Jones exhibited work at the British Institute, The Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists.
