Autumn Woods
1848-1923, American

A superb autumn landscape by New Hampshire artist William Preston Phelps, this painting measures 20 x 30 inches, painted with oils on board, c. 1900. It is signed "W P Phelps" in a tasteful modern frame. Known as the "Painter of Monadnock", Phelps lived most of his life in Dublin, NH, with the exception of several years he spent studying art in Europe. He painted many scenes of the area landscape of farms, fields and forests, most of which were set against the backdrop of the majestic Mount Monadnock.

This 1935 linocut by the American artist Walter Dubois Richards measures 5 x 7 inches and is pencil signed. Richards was an illustrator, painter and printmaker, studying with Stow Wengenroth in Maine and was known for his industrious rural scenes and his use of strong, dramatic lights and darks.

This drawing by Dexter Dawes measures 21 1/4 x 14 1/2 inches and is dated "July 7, 1929" on the lower margin. Dawes was born in Englewood, NJ and went on to study at New York City's Art Student League. He summered in Marlboro, NH surrounded by beautiful gardens with views of Mount Monadnock which became the inspiration for many of his lithographs and drawings. He belonged to a number of associations including the National Arts Club
