The Albert Hall
1885-1925, English

This is a very rare etching from a scarce, unpublished plate by Francis Sydney Unwin. The image size is 12 1/8 x 16 inches, 1916, pencil signed; a richly inked impression on a fine cream colored Japan paper. Unwin studied at the Winchester School of Art and the Slade School; he traveled extensively throughout Europe and spent several months in Egypt drawing the tomb interiors for an archaeological expedition. He then settled in London, becoming known for his landscapes and remarkable interior architectural views, such as this finely detailed image of the Albert Hall.

Painting

Dawn on the Seashore

This is an atmospheric 19th Century French painting attributed to Maxime Emile Louis Maufra (1861-1918). Oil on canvas, 8 3/4 x 14 inches, c. 1890s, unsigned, with a label on the back identifying the painting as Maufra's, framed. There is also a stamp on the back of the canvas "Blanchet 20 Rue Saint [Benoit?] Paris", a well known 19th century artist supply store. Although we cannot be certain of the artist, this is a well painted seascape with a subtle palette and lovely sense of light and atmosphere, and certainly appears to have been done by a very competent hand.
