This 1939 etching by American printmaker, Douglas Gorsline measures 10 x 8 inches and is pencil signed, dated and titled on the lower margin. Gorsline attended the Yale School of Art and the Art Students League of NY and taught at the National Academy of Design. He was the first American artist to be invited to China. His work is in several musuems and private collections.

Heavy Surf at Sunset

This is a beautiful luminist style seascape by Mauritz Frederik Hendrik De Haas, one of the preeminent marine and landscape painters of the 19th century. Oil on canvas, 24 x 40 inches, c. 1880, signed on the lower left, in an ornate period gilt frame. Born in Holland, De Haas studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and at The Hague. At 27 years old he immigrated to the US and opened a studio in NYC. He painted exquisite marine and landscape views, and was known for his masterful ability to capture the full range of light reflecting off a stormy surf or the moon reflecting off a calm sea.
