Kollwitz was known for her dramatic images of the poor, especially women and children, and the stark realities of poverty and war. She also created many self portraits over the course of her long career, this litho being her last one.

Kollwitz was a German Expressionist artist known for her dramatic images of the poor, especially women and children, and the stark realities of poverty and war. Her two most famous series are the 'Weaver's Revolt' and the 'Peasant War', both inspired by historical events.
