Setting Sail, Early Morning
1850-1921, American

Oil on canvas, 12 x 20 inches, 1881, signed and dated, in a period gilt frame. As a young man, Johnson was a sailor and one of only twelve survivors aboard a ship that caught fire and sank of the coast of South Africa. He returned to his native Boston, Massachusetts, and studied art with marine painter William E. Norton. Johnson went on to become very well known for his nautical and marine paintings in the later part of the 19th century.

Pencil signed "Kerr Eby imp", the "imp" indicating that Eby printed this impression himself. Editioned in pencil, edition of 100. C. 1933. Catalog: Giardina 176. The scene depicted is likely in Connecticut. As is typical of his work, there is a skim of unwiped ink left on the plate to create tone in the sky. Plate measures 6 1/2 x 11 3/4 inches on 10 1/4 x 15 1/4 inch laid type paper.
