Setting Sail, Early Morning
1850-1921, American

Oil on canvas, 12 x 20 inches, 1881, signed and dated, in a period gilt frame. As a young man, Johnson was a sailor and one of only twelve survivors aboard a ship that caught fire and sank of the coast of South Africa. He returned to his native Boston, Massachusetts, and studied art with marine painter William E. Norton. Johnson went on to become very well known for his nautical and marine paintings in the later part of the 19th century.

Caissons on Vesey Street
1857-1926, American

Etching, image size 14 x 9 1/2 inches, edition of 75, 1921, cat: Wuerth- 854, pencil signed. A beautiful, very richly inked impression. In this remarkable image, Pennell uses delicate lines and rich contrast to create a dramatic scene of construction in New York City. This was Pennell's last recorded etching.
