Paul Daniel Ortlip was a well known landscape and portrait artist from Fort Lee, NJ. Born into an artistic family, he studied in NY and Paris. After serving in the military he became the participating artist for NASA, the official US Navy Artist and was first commissioned by the White House to paint portraits of the astronauts. Later, he also did a portrait of John F. Kennedy. His works are housed in the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum and the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library.

Print

The Rapids Above Niagara
1837-1926, American

This is a remarkable etching by Thomas Moran after his oil painting of the same name. The image measures 6 x 7 7/8 inches, 1886, printed on handmade watermarked Sweden paper, possibly an early proof. This print is initialed and numbered in the plate, pencil signed on the lower left margin. It is number 51 in the Klackner catalog, in which it is described as "A study of the great wave, remarkably vivid in effect." Thomas Moran was a leading artist of the American etching revival, and in 1877 was one of the founders of the New York Etching Club.
